In pursuance of the policies laid down under the National Policy on Education 1986 and its program of action, the Academic Staff College was set up in 1987 to prepare college and university teachers in meeting the challenge of providing quality education to an ever increasing number of students. With the motto “A Lamp Can Never Light Another Lamp Unless It Keeps Its Own Flame Burning”, the College conducts three types of programs for the benefit of college University teacher.
The Programmes
The Academic Staff College conducts three types of programmes:
  1. Orientation Programs of four weeks duration.
  2. One Refresher and One Orientation Course are mandatory for the promotion of college/university lecturers to the Lecturer Senior Scale grade.
  3. Refresher Courses of three weeks duration are meant for experienced teacher.
  4. Short-term courses/workshops for teachers and administrative functionaries in higher education system.  
All activities of the college are being fully funded by. The College ever since its inception has conducted 44 Orientation Programmes and 162 Refresher Courses in a variety of subjects in social sciences, languages, humanities and physical, chemical and life sciences. As many as 1338 teachers have attended the Orientation Programmes and over 4600 have attended the Refresher Courses. The programmes during 2004 – ‘05 include Refresher Courses in English, Commerce, Mathematics, History, Human Rights, Environmental Science, Computer Science and one Orientation Programme.
The programmes are conducted with the cooperation of the faculty of the University post graduate departments. Eminent academicians, researchers and professionals are regularly invited to lecture and interact with the teacher-participants. Besides attending lecture sessions and interacting with experts, each participant is expected to present a seminar paper. As stipulated by the UGC, the participants’ performance during the course is evaluated. Their feedback on the course is also obtained. The College has a modest collection of over 2300 books in its library.
How to Attend the Programmes
